The United States has increased EU tariffs on aluminum

Last February, the surge in tariffs on aluminum wanted by the President of the United States, Donald Trump, entered into force. Unfortunately, the EU is not exempt from it. The decision puts Europe in a difficult condition, which in the sector aluminum has already faced an excessive increase in the price of raw materials, specifically Trump has imposed new duties equal to 25% on steel derivatives and 10% on aluminum derivatives.

They are "sanctions" that support the already existing leap, with the same percentages, announced almost two years ago. The United States has declared that the duties on aluminum to the EU and to the other world markets have been applied for reasons of "national security": in other words, America wants to protect a domestic industrial base defined as "essential for defense and infrastructures of critical importance ”and give new impetus to the national industry in the production of aluminum and steel.

EU tariffs on aluminum and the difficulties caused by the virus

The EU is therefore not exempt from the aluminum tariffs imposed by Trump, despite being an allied economy. Only Argentina, Australia, Canada and Mexico were spared from the American maneuver. The imposition of the United States precedes the market difficulties caused by the Coronavirus, which in turn put the whole sector in difficulty. Especially in China, but now the consequences will also have to be assessed in Europe.
